Fillings

Fillings are a reality of dental care. Over time, bacteria and acid can combine to cause demineralization of the teeth. This results in cavities. Sometimes even people who brush and floss regularly get cavities. The important thing is to catch them quickly while the softened area is small and easily fixable. While a small cavity is not a huge problem, if left untreated the affected area can spread until it reaches the pulp of the tooth. The pulp is the center part of the tooth that is made up of living tissue, blood vessels, and nerves. If the cavity reaches the pulp, it can become infected and eventually need a root canal.

Fillings restore teeth that are damaged by decay. The first step of the process is to remove any decay, clean the affected area, and then fill the cleaned out cavity with a filling material. Thus the name, filling. By taking out the damaged part of the tooth and filling it, this treatment helps stop decay from spreading.

Even though fillings are a straightforward procedure, if they are not completed it can lead to bigger issues, such as infection. Oral and gum disease has a strong link to heart disease, so it’s crucial to be vigilant in your dental health.
